iPhone Storage Guide: 128GB vs 256GB vs 512GB vs 1TB

For iPhone storage, 128GB vs 256GB, most people in Uganda should choose 256GB. WhatsApp media, photos and apps fill 128GB within 1–2 years, and you cannot add a memory card to an iPhone later.
Pick 512GB or more only if you record a lot of 4K video, run a business from your phone or keep music and movies offline.

What fills up your iPhone in Uganda
- WhatsApp: group videos, voice notes and status downloads are the biggest space users for most people. Turn off “Save to Photos” in WhatsApp settings to slow this down.
- Photos and video: one minute of 4K video at 60fps uses roughly 400MB. A wedding or graduation can use several gigabytes.
- Apps and games: TikTok, Instagram, CapCut and mobile games each grow over time with cache.
- iOS itself and Apple Intelligence also need space.
Why 256GB is the sweet spot
The iPhone 17, 17e and iPhone Air all start at 256GB, which shows Apple also sees it as the new normal. On the iPhone 16, going from 128GB to 256GB costs only UGX 300,000 more (iPhone 16 256GB), less than paying for cloud storage over a few years.
More storage also helps resale value when you trade in later.
Is iCloud a good alternative?
iCloud works well if you have reliable Wi-Fi or a large data bundle. Uploading thousands of photos on mobile data in Uganda can be expensive, so many people prefer buying more storage on the phone.
Check your current usage
On your current phone go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. If you are already using more than 100GB, choose at least 256GB for your next iPhone, or 512GB if you are above 200GB.
