How to Buy an Original iPhone in Kampala: 8 Checks Before You Pay

To buy an original iPhone in Kampala, check the serial number on Apple’s website, match the IMEI on the box and phone, and confirm the model number starts with “M”. These checks take five minutes and protect you from fake, refurbished or stolen phones.
Many buyers in Kampala pay new-phone prices for refurbished or “clone” iPhones. Use this list every time, at any shop, including ours.

1. Check the box seal
A new iPhone box has a pull-tab seal at the bottom, not shrink-wrap plastic. If the tab is missing, broken or the box is wrapped in loose plastic, ask questions.
2. Match the IMEI
Dial *#06# on the phone. The IMEI must match the sticker on the box and, on most models, the SIM tray. Any mismatch means parts or the box were swapped.
3. Check the serial on Apple’s website
Go to Settings → General → About and copy the serial number. Enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com. A new phone shows the correct model and either no activation date or a very recent one.
4. Read the model number
In Settings → General → About, tap the model number. The first letter tells you its history:
| First letter | Meaning |
|---|---|
| M | Brand new retail unit |
| F | Refurbished by Apple or a carrier |
| N | Replacement unit from a warranty swap |
| P | Personalised (engraved) new unit |
5. Check battery health
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health. A new iPhone shows 100% and a very low cycle count. Anything below 100% on a “new” phone means it has been used.
6. Check Parts and Service History
In Settings → General → About, a section called Parts and Service History appears if a screen, battery or camera was replaced. On a sealed new phone, it should not show any “Unknown part” warning.
7. Make sure there is no iCloud lock
The phone should open to the “Hello” setup screen. If it asks for someone else’s Apple ID, do not buy it. That phone is locked and may be stolen.
8. Test Face ID, cameras and network
Set up Face ID, take a photo with each camera, and make a call with your MTN or Airtel SIM. Clone phones often fail Face ID or run a fake version of iOS.
